<p>A <strong>flower</strong>, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in <a title="Flowering plant" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowering_plant">flowering plants</a> (plants of the division <a class="mw-redirect" title="Magnoliophyta" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnoliophyta">Magnoliophyta</a>, also called angiosperms). The biological function of a flower is to mediate the union of male sperm with female ovum in order to produce seeds. The process begins with pollination, is followed by fertilization, leading to the formation and dispersal of the seeds. For the higher plants, seeds are the next generation, and serve as the primary means by which individuals of a species are dispersed across the landscape. The grouping of flowers on a plant are called the <a title="Inflorescence" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflorescence">inflorescence</a>.In addition to serving as the reproductive organs of flowering plants, flowers have long been admired and used by humans, mainly to beautify their environment but also as a source of food.</p>

No common name is widely used, though they are sometimes called &#8220;Chinese evergreen&#8221;.</p>
<p>They are <a class="mw-redirect" title="Herbaceous" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbaceous">herbaceous</a> <a title="Perennial plant" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perennial_plant">perennial plants</a> growing to 20-150 cm in height. The <a title="Leaf" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf">leaves</a> are alternate on the stems, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, dark to medium green, 10-45 cm long and 4-16 cm broad, depending on the species. The <a title="Flower" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower">flowers</a> are relatively inconspicuous, white or greenish-white <a title="Spathe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spathe">spathes</a> that can give way to red <a title="Berry" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berry">berries</a>.</p>
<p>The sap of this plant is poisonous to health. It causes irritation in skin and if taken orally causes irritation of mouth, lips throat and tongue.</p>
<p>They are popular <a title="Houseplant" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houseplant">houseplants</a> and <a title="Ornamental plant" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornamental_plant">ornamental plants</a> for <a title="Office" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office">offices</a> and <a title="Shopping mall" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopping_mall">shopping malls</a> because they are the easiest houseplants to grow. Numerous <a title="Cultivar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultivar">cultivars</a> have been selected, including plants with <a title="Variegation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variegation">variegated</a> leaves. They tolerate a wide range of light, as well as neglect, and are relatively resistant to pests.</p>
<p>Chinese evergreens are very tolerant plants that do well in a variety of settings. Several species are available, some with dark green leaves and others that are variegated. Aglaonema flourish for years.</p>
<p>They prefer indirect light and partial shade. They do best in shadow-less light, such as a north window. They prefer heavy soil, which should be kept moist but not soggy. They do not tolerate the cold; they should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C (50°F), with optimal growing conditions between 20°C (68°F) and 30°C (86°F). High air <a title="Humidity" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidity">humidity</a> is also important. They are easy to propagate from <a title="Cutting (plant)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutting_%28plant%29">cuttings</a>, which will root in a glass of water, or from divisions.</p>

Consisting of about 2160 species, <em>Euphorbia</em> is one of the most diverse genera in the plant kingdom. Members of the family and genus are sometimes referred to as <em>Spurges</em>. The genus is primarily found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Afica and theAmericas, but also in <a class="mw-redirect" title="Temperate zone" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperate_zone">temperate zones</a> worldwide. Succulent species originate mostly from Africa, the Americas and Madagascar. There exists a wide range of insular species, namely on the Hawaiian Island where spurges are collectively known as <em><strong>ʻakoko</strong></em></p>

<p>The <a title="Common name" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_name">common name</a> &#8220;spurge&#8221; derives from the <a title="Middle English" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_English">Middle English</a>/<a title="Old French" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_French">Old French</a> <em>espurge</em> (&#8220;to purge&#8221;), due to the use of the plant&#8217;s sap as purgative<a class="mw-redirect" title="Purgative" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgative"></a>.</p>

<p>The <a title="Genus" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus">genus</a> <em><strong>Lilium</strong></em> are <a class="mw-redirect" title="Herbaceous" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbaceous">herbaceous</a> flowering plants normally growing from <a title="Bulb" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulb">bulbs</a>. They comprise a genus of about 110 <a title="Species" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species">species</a> in the lily family, <a title="Liliaceae" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liliaceae">Liliaceae</a>. They are important as large showy flowering garden plants. They are important culturally and in literature in much of the world.</p>
<p><span id="more-22"></span></p>
<p>Some species are sometimes grown or harvested for the edible bulbs.</p>
<p>The species in this genus are the true lilies. Many other plants exist with &#8220;lily&#8221; in the common English name, some of which are quite unrelated to the true lilies.</p>
<p>Numerous forms are grown for the garden, and most of these are hybrids. They vary according to their parent species, and are classified in the following broad groups;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Species</strong> (Division IX). All natural species and naturally occurring forms are included in this group.</li>
<li><strong>Asiatic hybrids</strong> (Division I). These are plants with medium sized, upright or outward facing flowers, mostly unscented. They are derived from central and East Asian species.</li>
<li><strong>Martagon hybrids</strong> (Division II). These are based on <em>L. martagon</em> and <em>L. hansonii</em>. The flowers are nodding, Turk&#8217;s cap style (with the petals strongly recurved).</li>
<li><strong>Candidum hybrids</strong> (Division III). This includes hybrids of <em>L. candidum</em> with several other mostly European species.</li>
<li><strong>American hybrids</strong> (Division IV). These are mostly taller growing forms, originally derived from <em>L. pardalinum</em>. Many are clump-forming perennials with rhizomatous rootstocks.</li>
<li><strong>Longiflorum hybrids</strong> (Division V). These are cultivated forms of this species and its subspecies. They are most important as plants for cut flowers, and are less often grown in the garden than other hybrids.</li>
<li><strong>Trumpet lilies</strong> (Division VI), including Aurelian hybrids. This group includes hybrids of many Asiatic species, including <em>L. regale</em> and <em>L. aurelianse</em>. The flowers are trumpet shaped, facing outward or somewhat downward, and tend to be strongly fragrant, often especially night-fragrant.</li>
<li><strong>Oriental hybrids</strong> (Division VII). These are based on hybrids of <em>L. auratum</em> and <em>L. speciosum</em>, together with crossbreeds from several mainland Asiatic species. They are fragrant, and the flowers tend to be outward facing. Plants tend to be tall, and the flowers may be quite large. An example is <a title="Lilium &quot;Stargazer&quot;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilium_%22Stargazer%22">Lilium &#8220;Stargazer&#8221;</a>.</li>
<li><strong>Other hybrids</strong> (Division VIII). Includes all other garden hybrids.</li>

<p><strong>Orchidaceae</strong> (or <strong>Orchid family</strong>) is the largest <a title="Family (biology)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_%28biology%29">family</a> of the flowering plants (<a class="mw-redirect" title="Angiospermae" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angiospermae">Angiospermae</a>).<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid#cite_note-0">[1]</a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid#cite_note-1">[2]</a> Its name is derived from the genus <em><a title="Orchis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchis">Orchis</a></em>.</p>
<p><span id="more-12"></span><!--more--></p>
<p>The <a title="Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Botanic_Gardens,_Kew">Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew</a> list 880 <a title="Genus" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus">genera</a> and nearly 22,000 accepted <a title="Species" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species">species</a>, but the exact number is unknown (perhaps as many as 25,000)<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid#cite_note-2">[3]</a> because of <a class="mw-redirect" title="Taxonomic" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxonomic">taxonomic</a> disputes. The number of orchid species equals about four times the number of <a title="Mammal" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal">mammal</a> species, or more than twice the number of <a title="Bird" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird">bird</a> species. It also encompasses about 6–11% of all <a class="mw-redirect" title="Seed plants" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed_plants">seed plants</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid#cite_note-3">[4]</a> About 800 new orchid species are added each year. The largest genera are <em><a title="Bulbophyllum" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulbophyllum">Bulbophyllum</a></em> (2,000 species), <em><a title="Epidendrum" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidendrum">Epidendrum</a></em> (1,500 species), <em><a title="Dendrobium" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrobium">Dendrobium</a></em> (1,400 species) and <em><a title="Pleurothallis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurothallis">Pleurothallis</a></em> (1,000 species). The family also includes the <em><a title="Vanilla" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla">Vanilla</a></em> (the genus of the <a title="Vanilla planifolia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla_planifolia">vanilla plant</a>), <em><a title="Orchis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchis">Orchis</a></em> (type genus) and many commonly cultivated plants like some <em><a title="Phalaenopsis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalaenopsis">Phalaenopsis</a></em> or <em><a title="Cattleya" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattleya">Cattleya</a></em>.</p>
<p>Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century, <a title="Horticulture" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horticulture">horticulturists</a> have more than 100,000 <a title="Hybrid (biology)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_%28biology%29">hybrids</a> and <a title="Cultivar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultivar">cultivars</a>.</p>
